How Ratings Work by Sport
QuiteEven uses ratings to compare the expected strength of players and teams. Beating a stronger opponent is more surprising than beating a weaker one, so it has a larger effect. Losing to a weaker opponent also has a larger effect than an expected loss.
There are no formulas to manage. Owners and administrators set sensible starting ratings, report results, and QuiteEven handles the changes supported by the selected sport.
Who can do this? Owners and administrators can view and edit ratings and report results. Members can see teams and results, but player rating values are kept in the administrator view.
Hockey
Hockey players can have separate ratings for Forward, Defense, and Goalie. Only positions enabled on the member profile are available to the team generator.
When teams are generated, QuiteEven considers:
- a player's rating in the position they are assigned;
- similar team sizes and overall team strength;
- a similar gap between the highest and lowest assigned ratings on each team;
- the distribution of positions, including goalies; and
- the balance of Forward and Defense strength across both teams.
A flexible player may be assigned away from their preferred position when their saved rating for another position makes the teams fairer.
When hockey ratings change
Hockey ratings do not change when each individual result is reported. QuiteEven collects the reported results and applies one combined update when an administrator selects Complete Competition.
Each player is updated in the position they played in each reported match. If a player played Forward in one set and Defense in another, those results contribute to the corresponding saved ratings.
- An expected win normally produces a modest increase.
- An upset win produces a larger increase.
- An expected loss normally produces a modest decrease.
- An upset loss produces a larger decrease.
- A draw can still change ratings: the lower-rated side generally gains and the higher-rated side generally loses. Similar teams change little.
Warning: Completing the competition is the step that saves hockey rating changes. Merely reporting results or stopping the competition does not apply them.
Badminton
Badminton members have separate Singles and Doubles ratings. QuiteEven chooses the correct one from the match lineup:
- a one-player-versus-one-player match changes Singles ratings;
- a two-player team match changes Doubles ratings.
When badminton ratings change
Badminton ratings change as soon as an administrator reports each match result. A separate completion step is not required for those already reported matches.
The strength of the opponent or opposing pair affects the size of the change. In doubles, the two players are evaluated as a pair while each member's own current rating is still taken into account. As in hockey, a draw may help the lower-rated side and reduce the higher-rated side.
Warning: Because a reported badminton result updates ratings immediately, check the winner before submitting it. A competition cannot be removed or restarted after a result has been reported.
General
General teams use one Player rating. QuiteEven splits confirmed players into two similarly sized teams and tries to keep their average strength close.
You can report wins and draws and keep a competition history, but General results currently do not change ratings automatically. An owner or administrator can adjust Player ratings from the Members page when needed.
Guests
Guests participate in team generation with a neutral rating of 1200. Their names and selected positions can appear in teams, but they are not linked to permanent member profiles. Therefore:
- guests never receive saved rating changes;
- a guest's future starting rating remains 1200; and
- the registered members who play with or against guests can still receive supported sport-specific changes.
Rating snapshots and later edits
Generated matches keep the lineup and rating information used when they were created. Editing a member afterward does not silently change an existing matchup. Update attendance, positions, and ratings before selecting Generate teams whenever possible.
