Generating Teams and Running Competitions
A competition turns the confirmed attendance for an event into playable teams, tracks results, and prepares later sets. The exact team-building behavior follows your team's selected sport.
Who can do this? Owners and administrators generate or edit teams, report results, and control the competition. Members can view the published teams and result history.
Plan requirement: General competition and rating balance are available on the Free plan. Hockey and Badminton competition engines require a plan with sport-specific competition access. See Plans, Permissions, and Feature Access.
Before generating teams
- Open the event.
- Review the Attendance tab.
- Confirm that every person who will play has a Yes response. Maybe, No, and waitlisted responses are not included.
- Check guest names and positions.
- Update member positions and ratings if needed.
- Resolve any attendance changes before generating the first set.
At least two confirmed members are required. Guests attached to a confirmed member are included as players.
Tip: Good input produces better teams. Resolve duplicate people, incorrect positions, and outdated ratings before generation.
Generate the first teams
- On the event page, select Generate teams.
- For Badminton, choose the number of available courts, from 1 to 8, and confirm.
- Open the Teams view and review the generated lineup.
- If custom team names are configured in Team Settings, QuiteEven uses available names; otherwise it uses names such as Team A and Team B.
What happens next? The competition becomes active and the Live Match controls show the next result that can be reported.
What generation does for each sport
Hockey
QuiteEven creates two similarly sized teams and balances overall strength, the ELO spread within each team, hockey positions, goalies, and Forward/Defense strength. A player with ratings for more than one position may be moved from their preference when it materially improves the lineup.
Each hockey set contains one match. Later sets repeat the existing matchup; changing event attendance after the first set does not rebuild that hockey roster automatically.
Badminton
QuiteEven uses the chosen court count to arrange matches into courts and time slots. It primarily creates doubles matches and may add a singles match when the number of players and open court space allow it.
When everyone cannot play in the same set, the set lists skipped players or byes. Later sets consider previous teammates, opponents, and byes so participation and pairings can rotate while remaining reasonably balanced. A new badminton set is built from the current confirmed attendance.
General
QuiteEven splits players into two similarly sized teams and minimizes the difference in average Player rating. Each set contains one match, and later sets repeat the existing matchup.
Review and manually adjust teams
For Hockey and General, an administrator can edit the current unplayed match:
- In the Live Match area, select Edit teams.
- Drag players between teams on a larger screen, or use the move controls on mobile.
- Remove anyone who cannot play, then use Add player on the destination team to select any event invitee or RSVP guest. The picker shows the person's current attendance status but does not restrict who an administrator can add.
- For a last-minute player who is not registered, select Add unregistered player and enter their name and estimated Elo. Hockey replacements also require a position.
- For Hockey, select a registered player's position when they need to play a different role. Only positions with an existing Elo rating are available, and the editor uses that rating in the team total.
- Review the displayed warnings if one team is at least 10% stronger by total rating or the edit moves farther from the 3 Forward : 2 Defense skater mix. Goalies are not part of the 3:2 mix.
- Keep at least one player on each team and select Save.
The warning does not prevent saving. An unregistered player's estimated Elo is included in team-strength calculations, but the player does not receive a member rating update. Saved Hockey and General rosters are reused when later sets are generated. Manual team editing is not available for Badminton matches.
Report a result
- Find the current match in Live Match.
- Check the team names and player list carefully.
- Select the winning team, or select Draw.
- Wait for the next match or set controls to become available.
A result can be submitted only once. Reporting it completes that match; when every match in a set has a result, the set is complete.
Warning: There is no result-correction control in the customer interface. Confirm the outcome before selecting it.
Generate another set
The Generate Next Set button becomes available after every match in the current set is complete.
- Report all results in the current set.
- Select Generate Next Set.
- Review new court assignments, teams, skipped players, or the repeated matchup, depending on the sport.
- Continue reporting results.
Badminton will not generate another set after a configured maximum has been reached. Hockey and General require confirmation before adding another set.
Complete, stop, restart, or remove
Complete Competition
Use Complete Competition after the current set is fully reported and no more sets are needed. This closes the competition. For Hockey, it also applies the combined rating changes from all reported matches. Badminton changes were already applied as results were reported; General results do not automatically change ratings.
Stop Competition
Use Stop Competition when play is ending before the normal completion flow. Stopping prevents further set generation. Treat it as an end-of-session action, especially after results exist.
Restart competition
For Badminton, Restart competition is available only before any match has been completed or result reported. It removes the current generated teams and unplayed matches, lets you choose the court count again, and generates a replacement first set.
Remove competition
Remove competition is available only before any result is reported or match completed. It removes generated teams and unplayed matches so the event can return to its pre-competition state. For Hockey or General, use Edit teams when only the current roster needs to change.
Warning: Once a result has been reported, the competition cannot be restarted or removed through these controls.
Share teams
After teams exist, use Share teams near the event header. You can:
- copy the teams as plain text;
- copy the teams together with a live link; or
- copy only the live link.
The shared view shows customer-facing team information without administrator-only rating details.
If a control is unavailable
Check these common causes:
- Fewer than two members have responded Yes.
- The current set still has an unreported match.
- The competition has been stopped or completed.
- The Badminton maximum number of sets has been reached.
- Your role is Member rather than Owner or Admin.
- Your plan does not include the selected sport's competition engine.
